Ribbons

I just don't know what the fuzz is about with the ribbon thingy. Black, blue, yellow, green it doesn't end there. Ngayon may pink, may orange and purple. Sometimes a combination of two colors. Dati Red Ribbon lang masaya na tayo. Now it's totally different. Yes, it has been used as a symbol for a lot of things by people all around the globe. These includes grief, protest, awareness and surprisingly of respect and sympathy and are often called awareness ribbons.

According to Wikipedia. The yellow ribbon was used here in the Philippines during the Martial Law era as a symbolism of the Anti-Marcos Movement led by the Late Former President Corazon Aquino. It has been her color ever since. But prior to that, could still remember that a black ribbon has always been traditionally used by the grieving family as a sign death of a loved one. Now we use the plastic one.

At present, we can see ribbons everywhere. Tied to trees, car antennas, printed on shirts, in websites and sometimes it's even included in our profile pictures on some social networking sites. personally I think it has been overly used here in our country that sometimes it's meaning has been reduced to a mere fashion fad or an instant solution to some advocacy needs.

No wonder when a ribbon is appropriately used, it doesn't mean that much anymore. Just like yesterday, I was on my way to an appointment and the bus I'm ridding passed by a convoy of vehicles for one journalist who was a victim in Maguindanao. There it was. I saw it again. This time a black ribbon. Yes I saw it but I didn't feel anything. It was like, wala lang. Wala nang dating. Just like your favorite song that you hear over and over the radio.
